ENDORSEMENT PROCESS
Local Candidates
After the filing period closed on August 14, the Endorsement Committee of the South Lake Tahoe Democratic Club met with candidates on August 17, 18, and 19. Local elected officials were not on the panels that considered endorsements for the own agencies, e.g. City Council, LTUSD, STPUD. The committee interviewed all Democratic candidates that expressed a desire to be endorsed by the Club. The Committee made no endorsements for the STPUD Board of Directors
At the Club's first General Meeting (on September 10) after the Endorsement Committee's candidate interviews, club members were informed of concerns about the recommendations (e.g., on Facebook) and language in the Club By-Laws (Article II.1.c) stating that the Executive Committee "Recommend local non-partisan candidate and local ballot measure endorsements to the general membership." After a discussion of how the members could take action on the Endorsement Committee's recommendations, a motion was made to approve the Endorsement Committee's recommendations. The motion to approve was passed by a 20-0 vote.
Ballot Measurees
The Club asked members to vote on whether to take a position on Measures N (Vacancy Tax) and Measure U (LTUSD Bond). Ballots were e-mailed to members on Sept 13. Responses were due by 5 pm on Sept 16.

My goal is to strike a balance that uses all of the incredible assets that make South Lake Tahoe so special.
What program and policies will balance the needs of those of us who live here, the increasing number of new residents and our visitors?
What management tools can ensure that our community remains livable and economically viable into the future?
How can the City Council collaborate effectively to progress toward our regional goals?
How do we balance protecting our environment with the needs of our locals?
Answers to these questions must be thoughtful, strategic and creative. I am prepared to lead us there.

A Shared Vision for South Lake Tahoe
My vision for the future of the South Lake Tahoe area is to become a truly sustainable community that models solutions to climate change, and in so doing provides widespread job and economic benefits to Tahoe community residents and businesses. I envision town hubs thriving with locally-owned businesses, connected by an electric transit system, with far less traffic on our roads. I envision visitors being inspired by what they learn at Tahoe, which they take back home to help improve their own communities.
As your city council member, you have my promise that I will listen to the community, remain open-minded to different points of view, and make thoughtful decisions. It’s about we, not me.

With nearly twenty years of experience as an attorney, I am well-versed in reading and understanding complex laws and regulations, assessing and managing risk, identifying objectives and creating strategic plans to obtain the best results. I believe I would bring a valuable and unique perspective to the South Tahoe Public Utility District’s Board of Directors.
I recognize the challenges that the District is facing including fire suppression system expansion and the need to upgrade aging infrastructure before there is a catastrophic failure of equipment. I also understand that many individuals and businesses in our community are concerned about rate increases. If elected as a STPUD Director, I will work to formulate and implement long-term planning goals in a fiscally responsible, equitable and sustainable manner. As a Director, I will always be guided by what is in the best interest of our community as a whole, taking into account a diverse range of perspectives, financial considerations and the need to plan for the future. I firmly believe that elected officials must have transparency, accountability and operate at the highest ethical standards in representing the communities and districts that they serve.

Tutoring students in a small, rural school, I discovered my passion--education. In the following years, I yearned to give my students more educational opportunities like my immigrant grandparents gave my parents, and my parents gave me.
After earning my Master’s degree in Teaching, I led classrooms in extraordinary schools—one a national award winner, and the other, an Expeditionary Learning school. At both, teachers were encouraged to think creatively about ways to serve our diverse student body, to listen intently to our parent community, and to respond to cultural change.
After 12 years of teaching and many subsequent years substitute teaching, tutoring, coaching, and volunteering in classrooms, I felt that I needed to run for the school board. You elected me in 2016.
During my first term, we hired new leadership, developed plans for improved environmental sustainability and student wellness, opened new elementary science labs, and a renewed our focus on higher achievement for all our students. Despite significant challenges, we made measurable progress in many areas.
As fortune would have it, I am running unopposed in the 2020 election. Be assured that I will continue to honor my values of fiscal prudence, creative innovation, data-driven decision making and dedication to fostering the fullest potential of all our children during the next four years, too.

Why I am running:
I grew up in SLT in the 1960s and 70s. My father started up Alpine Animal Hospital, and I very much enjoyed my youth here. Tahoe created my love for water, skiing, and the great outdoors. I became a civil engineer specializing in water resources in 1983, and worked in private firms my entire career. For the last 15 years, I’ve been running my own engineering firm in Folsom. For 11 years, I was also an elected board member for the San Juan Water District near Folsom. I retired in April of this year to our house in Tahoe Keys, so I now have the time to devote to public service, and I feel my background would be useful to the ratepayers of STPUD. My top 3 priorities are:

- Make sure STPUD is sustainable from both an infrastructure standpoint, and a resource management standpoint. This means tackling replacements and upgrades in a proactive manner to minimize emergencies and service outages, make sure long term water supplies are secure, and make sure wastewater does not degrade our environment, and is in fact being recycled in a sustainable and useful fashion.
- Make sure rates and fees are fair and reasonable, and planned over many years to avoid rate spikes that are hard for ratepayers to handle.
- Hire and retain good people that work hard and care about this vital service they are providing. A good corporate culture is vital for organizational effectiveness.
